TWO charities have benefited from the dazzling creations of a Wells cake-maker.

Zoe Burmester of Sugar Street Studios was commissioned to make something special to mark the opening of two new furniture stores.

She came up with a waist high bust of a 1940s lady that required 48 eggs, and a medical research themed cake that took four days to make.

“It’s an absolute privilege to be able to provide a show stopping cake centrepiece for someone’s special day. It speaks to the child in all of us and simply put, cake makes people happy,” said Zoe.

The cakes were commissioned by Oak Furniture Land to celebrate the opening of new stores in Weston-super-Mare and Bath.

The 2ft-high 1940s lady cake was a vanilla sponge filled with old fashion vanilla butter creme and berry compote. The head, arms, hair and retro microphone were made from marshmallow rice crispie treats.

It was donated to Alzheimer’s Society in Weston-super-Mare and was shared with guests at the charity’s 1940s tea dance.

The vintage research cake tableau was made up of seven chocolate fudge and salted caramel cakes, and the edible magnifying glass was made from edible sugar glass.

It was donated to Alzheimer’s Society in Bath and shared with volunteers and researchers at the University of Bath, who carry out research into dementia.

Originally a film and TV set stylist, Zoe made the move int0 cake-making after making her son his first novelty birthday cake. She is now an award-winning cake artist and sugarcraft tutor working from a dedicated studio at Dinder.

In addition to creating cake sculptures for businesses, parties and weddings she also holds sugarcraft classes, and provides sugarcraft tutorials on the Sugar Street Studios’ Youtube channel.

“The popularity of artistic cakes has just exploded in the past few years, and an appreciation for edible art is what motivates me,” she said.

“One of the biggest compliments I get about my work, is when people say, ‘That’s a cake? Never!’ And then to put the proverbial cherry on top, they get to eat it.”
