New landlord will set high standards
THE new landlord of the Sherston Inn in Priory Road aims to turn around its fortunes with high standards and excellent service.
David Sims has been brought in by Punch Taverns to make the inn a popular destination again, after what he says has been a rocky few years for the Sherston.
Originally from Swansea, he has owned and run restaurants in Cardiff for many years, most recently Pier 64 at Penarth Marina, owned by former Welsh footballer Craig Bellamy.
Now he is excited by this new challenge, and said: “We want to instil confidence that we are here for the duration, and that a quality offer, super service and great standards are the drivers.
“This is an interesting project – and Wells is a great little city.”
A refurbishment of the five bedrooms – managed by David’s wife Carol – bar and dining area are planned next spring.
A new menu has already been introduced, which includes the use of SteakStones so that customers can cook the meat to their liking at the table.
There is also a new head chef, Stan Ballok, who said: “I want to build a great reputation for food that will have people coming back time after time.”
Stan, whose previous employers have included Ask in Wells and the Strode Arms at Cranmore, is currently looking for apprentices to work with him in the kitchen.
He is also focusing on the Christmas menu as the party season approaches – the Sherston will be offering a five-course Christmas meal for parties, and will also be serving meals on Christmas Day.
Keen to spread festive cheer, David has already started putting up the Christmas decorations.
