Around the societies: April 2018

The latest news from local organisations.

ANNUAL Dinner: This year it was proposed to hold an Annual Lunch, instead of an Annual Dinner. This will take place on Sunday, April 8. More information of time and venue will be communicated to members once we have all the details in place.

Visit from Fontanellato: At present the association’s committee are in communication with our twin town Fontanellato, for a visit to Wells by them. This will take place the weekend of April 28 to May 1. Once we have all the finer details of the visit the programme will be communicated to members.

Wells Carnival 2018: It is hoped that a delegation from our twin town of Paray-Le-Monial will join us for the 2018 carnival.

Membership: It would help the administration of the organisation if those members who pay by cash or cheque could set up a standing order to pay their subscription.

THE April evening meeting for Wells Civic Society will be on Wednesday, April 11, at 7.30pm at Wells Musuem. The speakers will be Ruth and Ian Ames White who will give an update on the Wells in Mosaic project.

The site for this amazing piece of artwork will be the Recreation Ground and it will be a great asset to the city.

ON Saturday, April 21, the Mid-Somerset Amateur Radio Club in co-operation with the Wells Library staff will hold a special event for International Marconi Day at the library.

This will feature an operating amateur radio station with a special call-sign commemorating the Marconi station located in Somerset County, New Brunswick, USA, which provided cross-Atlantic communications during the First World War in 1918, as well as several displays of interest to young and old, including early crystal sets, a Morse practice facility and modern computer-based receivers. For more information, please see the club website or the publicity posters at the library or elsewhere.

THE next meeting of the gardening club will see Helen Picton of Old Court Nurseries and Picton Garden in Worcestershire giving a talk called Daisy Days.

Specialising in Michaelmas Daisies since 1906, the nursery holds the National Collection of Asters and a reputation that goes with the expertise.

There will be choice plants for sale and a chance to reacquaint ourselves with the huge variety of these spectacular late season plants. The date is Thursday, April 12, at 7.30pm in the Town Hall, Wells. Everyone welcome. Visitors £3. More details on 01749 679182.

I WOULD like to invite anybody with an interest in Tinnitus or Hyperacusis to the next meeting of our support group, which is affiliated to the British Tinnitus Association and has run for seven years.

It can be an enormous help to talk with others having the same or similar problem. We share experiences and strategies which make it much easier to live as normally as possible with these conditions.

We will next meet at 7.30pm on April 19 in the Community Room at Wells Fire Station. If anybody would like further information, please phone me on 01749 673044 or email
